Needless to say, 2020 was challenging for everyone. The global music scene was rife with cancelled tours, virtual shows, delayed releases and all-round losses. African artistes were forced to innovate, or face falling into oblivion. In spite of the challenges, artists delivered overarching projects, especially during extended lockdown periods. With music lovers stuck indoors for long hours and music algorithms continuously introducing listeners to different genres, fans had all the time in the world to sit, reflex and listen.

Twitch 4EVA – Lost-EP
Ghanaian singer-songwriter, Twitch aka Prince Andor, released his debut EP, ‘Lost’ in 2020. Prior to this release, he had already collaborated with Kwesi Arthur and shared a stage with Sarkodie. ‘Lost’ is a 4-track EP and the lyrics are centered around love, deceit and pain.

Worlasi & Drvmroll – DIOS
Ghanaian duo, Drvmroll and Worlasi released their joint project ‘DIOS’ in November 2020 – ‘DIOS’ being an acronym for ‘Did It Ourselves’. Drvmroll is a producer and Worlasi is writer and singer/rapper. The EP features E.L., Kojo Cue, Feli Nuna, and other Ghanaian heavy weights.

ToluDadi – Stimuli
Nigerian Afro-fusion artist, ToluDadi (real name Toluwalope Ajani O.), is a newbie who deserves all of our attention. Listening to his project, ‘Stimuli’, you feel the influence of his Yoruba culture. The album was recorded in 2020 and features Cici Yeboah, AnoNimo and others.

Cheso – Respect to Tradition
Cheso’s ‘Respect to Tradition’ is a masterpiece. His Afro-fusion album is a perfect blend of sounds from Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Worlasi and Burna Boy. We recommend going straight to track 3 to experience that up-tempo afro-fusion vibe.

Lastee – Last
Lastee is a South African producer and artist. He learned the trade of the music business on his own and released his EP, ‘Last’ in 2020. Lastee has worked with Nasty C, Kwesta and a number of other heay-weights. On this project, he presents his rap and R&B sides and exceeds expectations in doing so.

BOYD – Boys With Broken Hearts (B.W.B.H.)
Ghanaian artist Boyd released his R&B themed E.P., ‘Boys With Broken Heart’ (B.W.B.H) in the second half of 2020. Harmattan Rain wrote extensively about this amazing project here.

Ganabwoy – Akono
Ganabwoy is versatile Afro-fusion Ghanaian artist based in Busua, an hour away from Takoradi. His 2020 album, ‘Nine’, features German singer Carla. On the album, the vocals from both artists narrate stories of sex and love. Be sure to listen to track 4, Akono, produced by Kuvie.

Kelvyn Boy – BlackStar
Kelvyn Boy, Ghanaian Afrobeats artist, released his sophomore album ‘Blackstar’ in November 2020. With this project, Kelvyn Boy proves that his impact on the Ghanaian music scene was never hypothetical and that he should definitely be on your playlists.
