Afropop sensation Blnde reaches a new height with her promisiing track “Omo to sexy”.
Like a tsunami, Blnde raised her game and burst onto the charts during the festive end-of-year period with her now iconic track “Omo to sexy”. Fast-paced, pop-inspired and viral on social networks, one thing’s for sure: the artist has passed a new milestone. We sat down with her to discuss this commercial success, her artistic identity and prospects.
It’s uncommon to possess a musical product capable of spreading this fast during the end-of-year period, especially with a very young artistic background. But that’s exactly what happened to the 24-year old Lagos-based talent Blnde. With great maturity, the artist measures how far she was able to come since her relatively recent debut in 2022 with the track Lightweight : “I’ve worked with so many people and managed to sharpened my skills. I’ve met amazing A&Rs along the way, amazing team, amazing producers. I’m just growing up over time, like what I care about changes, what I want to say changes. By God’s grace, I’m maturing. I feel this growth in all aspects, whether it’s on stage perfomances or my more considered choices during the creative process in the studio.” This path has challenged her and helped her grow as an individual talent. Emphasizing work ethic, vision and soul-searching, Blnde has succeeded in expanding her artistic spirit and building a creative bubble that has fueled her throughout 2024, a year for which she is both grateful and proud: “I think I feel prepared, even though I don’t particularly have all the pieces together right now, but ready for everything that I know is about to come. 2024 was a year of preparation. I spent like four months in London just recording music every day, working with new people and in Lagos at home it was the same situation. This year, I have learned to record and engineer myself. Throughout the year, I was making so many songs where I’m pouring my heart out on the track. There are records where I’m actually crying and It captures my journey pretty well. And I think Omo to sexy felt like cherry on the cake. I finally felt good and I wanted to have some fun at this time. It wasn’t intentional. I’m a very spiritual person and everything happens for a reason. So yeah, that’s just how I feel. 2024 was a year of growing, expanding my craft, healing as a person and preparing for highlights like today.”
Armed with a more consistent background and confidence in her artistic potential, Blnde feels ready for what’s coming next, and to spread her bold Afropop universe beyond the frontiers. Combining American and Nigerian origins, Her talent perfectly blends these two cultures to create unique and catchy records. Mixing influences going from the Pussycat Dolls to P-Square, from Rihanna to D’Banj, from Lady Gaga to May D and from Fergie to Nelly Uchendu, the artist is aware of her wide musical range: “I think this is something that really gives me a bonus. My perspective, my references, the shows I grew up watching, the songs I was hearing on the radio as a child are different from the typical Nigerian. It just gives me a different perspective and allows me to approach Afrobeats in a very special and different way. I love that for me. And it’s also really cool to see that my friends and the people I grew up with that are still in America connect with my music. It’s like I’m in the middle of both cultures. I feel like as an artist, it’s like a superpower because I can effortlessly reach more people, and everybody feels like they fit in what you’re showcasing as an artist. So that’s definitely an edge that I have and I think it’s dope, especially in this era of globalization of Afrobeats.”
Following the tremendous success of the song “Omo to sexy”, Blnde’s international success is sure to follow. She has been able to create a viral TikTok trend thanks to this single, garnering over 30M views across UGC content and 40,000 User generated videos on the platform. The song has captivated attention of majors like Wande Coal, Qing Madi, Skyla Tyla and more. Making waves beyond the platform on IG reels and YouTube. BLNDE made her TV debut on Afia tv and is currently attracting global attention around the record: “I feel very excited, happy and honestly grateful that it was this song and not the other songs where I was sad that pulled off this success. When I first heard this beat, it blew my mind and I just knew that I had to have fun on it in order to make something that would cut across. I created this track from my bed actually, over a period of three weeks. I like to take my time and polish every detail. And I remember playing it to so many people and they didn’t like it at first. But with this one, I was just so confident, emboldened and sure of his potential. So I was just like you guys just wait and see, literally. It ended up being the right move. I love that for me.” With a filmmaking degree and fashion background, dressing Africa’s some of Africa’s biggest stars, BLNDE crafts immersive experiences merging music, merchandise, and stunning visuals. As 2025 gets underway, the gifted talent from Lagos is looking forward to the exciting times ahead: “This year is supposed to be my project year, whether it’s an album or an EP. One thing for sure: a body of work will be out. I don’t want to drop something random that will confuse people. Like I would hope that whatever I’m creating can be distinct enough to be linked to me.”
