Tariq is on the journey to success
After an impressive success in 2023, Tariq begins takes another step on his journey
Nigeria has had an impressive run with break out artists the last few years, and everyone is keen to know who the next big thing will be for Nigerian music scene. 2023 saw a lot of newbies pop onto the scene, but Tar1q was a sure stand out.
Tar1q’s singles Bad Intention and Away were a welcome entry into the music. These releases predicted 2024 will be an exciting year for the 21-year-old talent from Benin City. At the beginning of the year he released Jigga featuring another burgeoning artist Khaid who scored a few chart toppers such as Jolie and Carry me Go in 2023. Tar1q’s 2024 release also coincided with his signing to Chocolate City Music on March 12. Founded in Nigeria in 2005 Chocolate City Music has been home and a pivot for many artists. The emerging talent who describes his style as a mix of Contemporary Afrobeats, Pop, Hip- Hop and classic R&B will join their roster alongside superstars such as Blaqbonez and Young Jonn.
“It’s exciting! It’s like another new phase in my life and I’m super grateful for that,” Tar1q says when asked how he feels about his new label family, “But I don’t take anything for granted and will keep on working. Being part of this label gives me more motivation now for the next heights I want to reach.”This new stage rewards a successful 2023 as Tariq humbly acknowledges: “People started to relate more and more to my music and that’s one of my major achievements. I had the chance to know my fan base a little more and bond with them. And streamwise, seeing that I was not only listened in Nigeria but also in US, UK, France, and Germany was a blessing.”
With the release of his first single “Jigga” under Chocolate City Music, on which Khaid features, Tariq confirms his expressive range and ability to express the themes of love and devotion: “I write songs based on my actual mood. It could be a sad song if I feel sad or love songs if this what I want to express this feeling like I did in “All I felt” for example”.
The future is bright for Tar1q and he’s looking forward to pushing the borders and spreading his vision for afrobeats as far as possible.
“I want to tell more stories,” he says excitedly, “so maybe there will be touring in Europe or America. And there’s definately gonna be a project coming out this year.”
