All eyes on KvngVidarr, new talent in young legend roster
“You are not to young to do legendary acts”. On February 6, 2024, the superstar fervently voiced the soul of his new label and its purpose. The Young Legend label is meant to be a creative cocoon for young talent. Earlier this year, the label welcomed KvngVidarr, a highly gifted young prospect from Lagos. We sat down with him to find out more about his background and ambitions as an artist.
(HR): How do you feel about your achievements in 2024?
(KvngVidarr): 2024 has been a really great year. I had some momentum, career wise. I managed to work on my first project and released it. It’s been a series of consecutive wins for me. I’m grateful for everything that is happening to me.
(HR): How would you describe your musical approach and the artistic style that suits you best?
(KvngVidarr): I like to blend a lot of different genres to get a unique sound that people could connect with. For example, I can blend afrobeats with R&B, highlife, EDM etc…. So I would describe my sound as afrofusion.
(HR): What were your musical inspirations growing up?
(KvngVidarr): I grow up listening to a lot of afrobeats and major artist like Wizkid, Davido, Burna. I also was a huge fan of R&B music thanks to my grandmother and listened to Backstreet Boys, Westlife etc…. Today when I’m creating, I draw inspiration from all these talents.
(HR): How would you characterize your growth as an artist since your debut in 2019?
(KvngVidarr): I learn how to develop my own system. Understand the music structure at the most basic level has help me to better understand my music and how to develop myself in my writing for me and for others. It took time, but step by step I managed to find the necessary people around me that could help me grow. It’s important to think about who you need around you to succeed (the right producer, the right video guy, the right lawyer, the right manager, etc…). I can feel the difference because now my major focus is on the creative aspects itself, which is my music, and everything around it is perfectly handled. I built myself a proper team now and look forward to next steps.
(HR): What is your own take about the classification of genre for African artists in international award ceremonies?
(KvngVidarr): I think when there will be proper understanding of the type of music that has been done in Africa, then there will be proper categorization. They need to come down and get more insights of all the sound in our continent, because there is a lot of varieties. But at the end of the day it’s still a good thing for African music to get this light.
(HR): Could you share with us the creative process behind your first EP “Kvng Vidarr” ?
(KvngVidarr): I wanted to express different range of emotions. There are different themes covered in each song that are essential to me. I talked about my darkest times, pain, happiness, love, manifestation. When I’m telling my story, it should feel like a series. I experiment, as a new artist, what the audience would connect the most with and see how I can develop afterwards.
(HR): The track “Want you gone” caught our attention particularly thanks to its catchy rhythm and soul vibe. How did you come up with this?
(KvngVidarr): I reached out to one of my friend who is a producer and basically told him that I’m working on my project and I need some of his magic. He send me this beat and loved it. Fun fact is I co-wrote this track with this friend of mine. She is a fantastic writer. I really liked working on “Want you gone” and the topic range of this song means a lot to me. When you’re going through this EP, “Want you gone” is like this soulful and calming record.
(HR): Where do you draw your inspiration when you write a song?
(KvngVidarr): I focus first on melodies; they are stronger to me and come naturally. When people listen to music, they remember melodies first and lyrics last. So, I try to get the perfect melody at first and then I start writing on it. I adapt my writing to the melody, so if the vibe of the instrumental is sad, then my lyrics will be. I’m trying to make the music as organic as possible.
(HR): This EP follows a year 2024 concludes a beautiful year for you as well, including your inclusion in the Young Legend roster owned by Joeboy. How did you feel about this news?
(KvngVidarr): It’s a new level for me, a major step. It solidifies my believe in what I’m doing musically and the idea that I have. I’m moving in the right direction. This news helped me reshaped my focus on things to develop more and be more engaging with my audience.
(HR): How would you describe your relationship with Joeboy?
(KvngVidarr): Joe is an exceptional person. I love to connect with him. He’s a very chill guy and very focused when work needs to be done. It’s important to have that type of person in your corner. He advises me a lot.
(HR): What could we expect from your from now? What is next for KvngVidarr?
(KvngVidarr): Upcoming music for sure. I’m also looking for ways to bring my audience closer to me and develop more. I really want to engage with them and be more active.
