The Man behind the Girl Power

In 2017, the world’s most powerful country has it’s women marching the streets demanding equality. For many developing countries like Nigeria, the concept of Women’s rights and equality is not fully grasped. In an even demanding industry like the creative arts, Women are highly overlooked.

This observation is what charged Abiri Bankole, popularly known as Bankyondbeatz , a 23 year old music producer born in Lagos state, Nigeria, to oversee Feugos Senoras.

Fuegos Senoras (Fire Ladies in Spanish), is not only an EP, it is a stand for women in Nigeria and all over the world to speak out. Perhaps that’s why he sought the help of seven Nigerian women scattered across the globe. Not only will they understand the effects of women empowerment at home, but also in different parts of the world.

Banky created this different, purely expiremental project with Neo Soul artist and Wallflower singer,Lady Donli who is based in the UK, as well as with Deena O, the Goethe University final year student and vocal coach who is currently working on a project in Rome and in her native Germany, bound to be released in 2017.

Eli Rossé  who performed at the Blues-fest, Ottawa in 2016 – alongside talented native; YUSSO, is also featured on the project. The 22year old’s performance at Blues-fest earned her an honourable mention among Nigerian music legends – Femi Kuti and Seal, as she became the 3rd Nigerian after them to grace the Canadian capital’s biggest show.

Nigerian based DJ Yin, who under the tutelage of Nigeria’s foremost disc jockey, DJ Jimmy Jatt, has come to blossom in this field for the past 4 years shows the world her singing skills on Banky’s Fuego Senoras.

AT the femcee pours her lyrical depth and venomous style – a combination of alternative Hip Hop and Afro Hip-Hop. The straight-to-the-gut lyricist appears on  ‘Pensive’ where she expresses her state of mind and dictates the vision for her music.

The ‘Soke’ hitmaker, Niniola, is also featured on this project. Having risen up the ranks in Nigerian music with her Afro-house style- a blend of Afrobeat and House, she pours her magic into her feature on Banky’s project.

Nigeria’s most Beautiful girl in 2007, Munachi Abi alias Muna is featured on Feugos Senoras as well. Having worked with work with Nigerian A-listers such as J-Martins, Waje and Psquare, Feugos Senoras was a chance for her to show the world she was more than just a pretty face. In June 2010, after years of collaborating with various artistes, the International relations and Diplomacy graduate signed a multi-year management contract with Ayo Shonaiya’s RMG company and started working on her debut album “The Goddess, The Hustler”. The Owerri native’s big break in the music industry came when she featured on the globally televised BET Cypher for the BET Awards in 2011 alongside other Nigerian femcees.

The 10 track project subtly addresses the much talked about social issue of Gender Equality that is said to be present in the entertainment industry as there are whispers of inadequate opportunities for female music talents. Bankyonthebeatz, through this EP, iconically tackles this phenomenon head on, by collaborating with only female artistes.
